INKSTER, Mich. —

The birthday of one of the world’s oldest people has drawn the attention of President Barack Obama.

The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/18kFz6t ) reports that 114-year-old Jeralean Talley of Inkster got a personal note from the president, who says she’s “part of an extraordinary generation.”

Talley was born May 23, 1899, in Montrose, Ga., and has lived for decades in her Detroit suburb.

Guinness World Records says that 116-year-old Jiroemon Kimura of Japan is the oldest living person, and AARP lists Talley as the oldest American.

About 100 guests turned out Sunday to celebrate Talley’s birthday at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. During the luncheon, she held a great-great-great-great grandson in her arms.

She caught seven fish Saturday, inspiring the Rev. Dana Darby’s Sunday sermon, “Let’s Go Fishin.’ ”— AP
